The Research Plan

The Research Plan defines the essence of the R&D process.  Purification research is not an open-ended activity, but a well-defined set of investigations of known duration tailored to a specific target compound in a specific matrix.  Separations science is an "art" only to the extent that efficient corporate research depends on experienced scientists to determine which avenues of exploration are likely to yield useful information, and which avenues are likely to be dead ends.  For example, performing a Soxhlet extraction or obtaining an extract residue or finding the retention time of the major impurities require about the same amount of time from one laboratory to another.  Knowing when the Soxhlet or residue determination or RT measurement is necessary, why they are necessary, and how to exploit this information form part of the basis of a good research plan.
